3 Simple Steps to Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats

3 Simple Steps to Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging applications used around the world, with over 800 million active users per month and about 1 billion messages sent each day, as of April 2014.

It’s also free to use, making it easy and affordable to stay in touch with friends and family wherever they are, whether they’re across town or across an ocean. Even with all its popularity and simplicity, there can be times when you want to back up your WhatsApp chats, so that you don’t lose any important conversations or contact information.

Step 1: Open the app

First, open your app drawer and find WhatsApp. If you don’t have it, download it from Google Play Store. Once downloaded and installed, you will be taken through a short setup process before landing on your home screen.

You can skip all of these by tapping Next at each screen until they are over with. Now that the app is set up, go back to the home screen and open the app. From here, tap More Options and select Settings (tap again if you cannot see it).

Here is where we change our settings for how many chats should be stored offline or sent as messages (when data connection is unavailable). Tap the option that says Chat Settings which is under Data Usage Controls. At this point there should be three sliders: Minimum App Storage Space To Keep Offline Messages, Allow Sending Messages When Data Connection Is Unavailable And How Many Chat Conversations To Keep Offline.

We recommend putting them in order so that the first one is Minimum App Storage Space To Keep Offline Messages and has 20 MB selected. The next one should allow sending messages when data connection is unavailable and its slider bar set to 50%. Lastly, how many chat conversations to keep offline slider bar needs to be 100% because no matter what number you choose, they won't show up in chat history unless they're backed up.

It might take a few minutes for your chats to backup but once it's done you'll notice it only shows recent ones unless those were backed up.

Step 2: Click on Settings

After you've tapped on App Settings, you'll be taken back to your app list. Scroll down until you find WhatsApp and tap on it. This will open a new menu with several different options in tow. Tap on Data Usage and then tap Backup Account.

You should now see a number of different services available for backing up your chats, including Google Drive and iCloud. If your phone is running an older version of Android (before 4.0), then there may also be an option for Local Backup that lets you store data right on your device's storage space; if so, make sure to enable that as well since it'll help reduce data usage when syncing backups over WiFi or cellular networks.

Step 3: Scroll down and click on Chat backup

Clicking on Chat backup will display all your chats on your iPhone device. If you have more than one number added in whatsapp, then go ahead and tap on each of those numbers. A popup will appear where you need to click on start the backup process for each of them.

Once you do that, a verification code will be sent via text message, enter it into whatsapp and continue with step 4. Please remember: if you have more than one phone number added in whatsapp then repeat step 3 for every phone number added! Lastly click on the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

You are now done backing up your whatsapp chat to this PC or Mac or other computer using iTunes file sharing option. You can now feel relieved as you don't have to worry about losing all those precious memories with family and friends whenever you reset or upgrade your iPhone device in future!
